About me:
'My name is Emma Withington and I am a recent graduate of Anglia Ruskin (Cambridge school of Art) in Film and TV Production. Freelance Writer/Director'
Who I am:
I have always been a writer and until A-level I believed that my career would be based solely in that area, until something changed my life; possibly forever. I took up Media Studies alongside English Language, Literature and Photography; which for a while was not my main focus. This was until I had an assignment to make a short film, animation or poster. I turned to my usual source of inspiration (Tim Burton) and created 'Weeney Todd' a short stop motion parody of the 2007 film 'Sweeney Todd', granted it isn't a masterpiece but it is the project that made me realize what I wanted to do with my life; make films. By utilizing all my main skills combined I could write, direct and even to an extent be a cinematographer and finally do something which I feel is worthwhile.
Since being at University my main skills have become writing and directing (drama, documentary and did extensive practice in commercial structure), but with a good basic set of skills in cinematography and editing. I have also done a great deal of work in the TV Studio we had provided to us, in which I was incredibly versatile, adaptable and proved to work well under the pressure of 'going live'. One example of working under pressure was during a crucial moment, the director had a breakdown and in my position of PA I took control and spoke to the floor members; telling them the situation and to call action as we were already cutting into broadcast time. This was remembered by my colleagues who made me PA for their final project. Another role I couldn't keep away from was camera operator which I thoroughly enjoyed-especially taking on the role of 'reaction camera'; as I call it. I gained a lot of confidence in this role over the twelve weeks in the studio and left feeling much more confident with framing and changing a shot in a 2-3 second time span. I really felt the adrenaline flow to my fingertips and take control; the machine becoming an extension of myself.
It was never all smooth sailing but all of my experiences have given me more depth as a person and writer, with a great sense of compassion and understanding.
I have had many life changing experiences along the way and I am still of course relatively inexperienced, but all I want to do is show people what I have to say, give people hope and make them think about things from a new perspective. For example my adverts, while appearing slightly cheesy and tongue in cheek have very powerful human messages underneath; the value of Freedom and the power of Redemption.
I hope that what I have to offer is of interest and that you will enjoy my catalogue so far!
Below is my show-reel with all my visual work, in which I made a substantial contribution. Most of which I wrote and Directed and can be found in full on this website!
All of my films have been made without a budget-imagine what I could do with one!
